They would simply take a small cut from the profits. However, marketing and promoting the book are expenditures you are going to bear alone.

With traditional publishing, the actual publisher will pay for the expenses, coupled with the price of having the book distributed, and that’s why royalties are usually only a small percentage to the author. Mainstream publishing involves lots of people and therefore the author has to share the earnings with lots of people.
