A really interesting career field, which many people don’t talk about, is that of the import-exporter. If you are wondering whether import-export is as glamorous as it sounds, then I’m here to answer your question. Don’t worry! It is! What other career is going to let you jet off to another country several times a year, meet tons of other people, and see the way other cultures live. Import- export is a very lucrative, exciting and wonderful business, but one where there are many risks too.

Although you probably don’t know this, many people work in the import-export trade in one way or another, but there are cultural factors, weather factors, and ecological factors that you have in this business, which you don’t in any other type.

Your success as an import-exporter will depend on the product you work with, who you work with and the financial ability you have in the country you trade with.

Your Marketing Strategies

Selling your product here depends on many other factors, that don’t apply to companies that deal with national marketing strategies, and you depend on a nation’s buying abilities.

Follow Government Rules

Importers-exporters have to deal with a country’s export trade laws, so you need to know what these are, and whether your product can meet those requirements or not. Find out about these laws at the federal trade commission. Many countries include websites where you can find out most of this stuff.

The same holds true for the import policies of the country you are importing to. These will also differ from country to country and will depend on agricultural and product regulations. These requirements are often online or at the country’s trade commission offices. These requirements are not generally difficult to meet, and often it is just the filling out of a form, and paying importation fees that is needed.

Transport

Importers and exporters have to learn about all kinds of transportation. They need to know which is the most economical form of transportation and which is the fastest, although the most expensive form. At times you will have to get a little creative and find viable ways of getting a product to the client. You may even have to use the old reliable taxi at times.

Import-export is just like any other business, just a little more exciting, and you need to be a little more communicative (that may include using hand and sign language) and just being a little more creative in every way possible. It is a pretty exciting field!
